Reorientation

Despite Islam’s deep and enduring roots across the African continent, there is often a lack of research and popular knowledge about Islam in Africa - its history, its intellectual traditions, and its role as a powerful force for social, economic, and political change, including in liberation struggles.

This gap is reflected in our choices and priorities: we are often more up to date with global affairs, than continentally grounded, more familiar with distant destinations than neighbouring societies, and more likely to platform scholars from far abroad, while overlooking the rich intellectual and Islamic heritage within Africa itself.

This should compel a deliberate shift - towards building stronger continental ties, cultivating a more grounded discourse, and challenging lingering biases. It calls for a reorientation of mindset - something which is urgent given the complex and often overlooked challenges facing Muslims across Africa today.

Informed analysis

From political repression and foreign military interventions in various parts of Africa, to violent conflict, geopolitical manoeuvring, resource competition, and shifting global alliances, the continent is deeply entangled in dynamics that directly affect Muslim communities.

As global politics trends toward more right wing and interest-driven paradigms, and as Islamophobic narratives become increasingly normalised, the need for informed, critical engagement becomes essential.

Grounded in credible research and rigorous analysis, a deeper awareness of continental realities is necessary - not only to understand these challenges, but to respond to them with clarity, solidarity, and purpose.
